Nigeria's Performance at the Paris Olympics a Complete Disaster – Ojugbana | Ajunwa

It’s a humongous disaster that a country with so much human capital and prowess can go for the games in 2024 and come back empty-handed. Botswana sent 11 athletes and returned with a gold and silver medal, Nigeria sent 82 and returned with none due to lack of intentional preparation

  1. Nigeria should focus on “Power” sports as they build on other disciplines. Discus, Shot put and Hammer throw are definitely sports Nigeria can dominate in if only seriously invested in

  2. Wilson Kiprugut Chumo was the first Kenyan and African, to win an Olympic medal when he bagged bronze in the 880 yards (now 800 metres) race at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Nigerian track and field legend Chioma Ajunwa revealed that she received little support from Nigeria in her preparation for the Atlanta 1996 Olympics, where she became the first Nigerian to win a gold medal. Ajunwa won gold in the women's long jump with a 7.12m leap, marking a historic achievement for the country.

  3. A country of 225m not even a bronze. It shows you how politicians have wrecked our country. The rot starts from aso rock where the biggest criminals buy their way into power. That rottenness is then spread down like wildfire and plague that has given a terrible society today.

  4. There are many talents out there in Nigeria but are yet to be discovered. You just don't pick a random person or a favoured person to come and represent your country. You have groom or mould them to become super stars. Start from Schools (primary/secondary/University, etc). Discover them young and award them scholarships to boost their interest and dedication.

  5. And senator said "Kenya was a lesser country, Nigeria is the giant of Africa." Soo saad to live in a cloud because it makes one too lazy to perform even a simple task like register a name for a qualified event. Nigerian officials in every area of society are the laziest on this planet.
    Too lazy to provide electricity,
    Too lazy to provide water.
Too lazy to provide decent hospitals
Too lazy to provide decent education
Too lazy to negotiate use of Dangote refinery…..it will take time n use of brain.
TOO LAZY TO PLAN FOR TOMORROW.
    Because they will loose sleep😢😢

  6. With Nigeria's status as the Giant of Africa, the country does not have to identify herself with other countries that perform woefully at the Olympic games. Those countries do not have the same population of youths and embedded natural wealth like us. We should be competing with frontline African countries like Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, Ethiopia, Algeria, etc. The world looks up to Nigeria as the beacon and shining light of Africa. So, let us not belittle ourselves or diminish our capacity in the international arena. We should always strive to better our past records at the Games. That shows continuity and development. We did well at Atlanta 1996 with gold medals in Long Jump Female (by Chioma Ajunwa) and Football among other medals. Why should we do less and come back without a medal almost three decades later? Kenya and South Africa are always consistent at the games because they prepare very well ahead of the competition by discovering new talents to replace ageing ones in fields where they have comparative advantage (e.g. the traditional marathon/long distance races for Kenya). Nigeria has an impressive history at the Olympics in boxing, wrestling, short sprints, relays, long jump, football, table tennis, weightlifting, discuss and shotput. Why should we not maintain that consistency by getting the right coaches, camps and training programmes to complement and justify the heavy funds invested every Olympics cycle? Frankly, the poor outings portray us as wasteful, unserious and lacking in purpose and organisation.

  7. I'm from the Philippines. I was surprised that Nigeria sent 88 athletes to Paris Olympics but got zero medals.
Philippines sent 22 athletes, got 2 golds and 2 bronze medals.
    No offense meant.

  8. Other countries prepares for 8 years to make 2 gold medals but Nigeria will bring so called athletes together in 3 months and you hear the minister tell you we will be coming back with 3 to 4 gold medals a set of mediocres

  9. A country that celebrates mediocrity has nothing to offer the world, every so proud Nigerian should cover his or her face in shame.
All what Nigeria has are experts in loots, lies, deceptions, killing and destruction.
No single Nigerian administrator or politician knows what's happening anywhere beyond the shores of our country.
They only know how to steal public funds and divert them to many already developed nations of the world without trace.
They only know how to celebrate mediocrity, nothing good can ever come from Nigeria till the world will end.
Just imagine a governor giving chicken change to those athletes who have spent all their livelihoods to serve Nigeria unaided by the nation from the onset.
