World’s Strongest Man Goes Carnivore: Metabolism Scientist Explains

Eddie Hall, who won the World’s Strongest Man in 2017 and who set the world Deadlift at 1102 lbs (500kg) has started a carnivore diet! In this video, I’ll breakdown what Eddie eats, explain how he’s losing weight on 10,000 Calories per day, discuss loose stools on carnivore, and more.

  1. I've been Carnivore or meat based for about 3 years. The biggest tangible benefit I get is no muscle soreness from weight training no matter how hard I workout. I'm 56 and I've been bodybuilding for 39 years.

  2. I don't know if it matters but the claim was liquid at room temperature oils like olive oil versus solid at room temperature fats like the beef fat and butter. Doing a liquified butter vs solid butter experiment seems like it wouldn't be a viable study since the butter would liquify internally regardless.

  3. Recently found your videos – good stuff. On this one, wouldn't the solid/liquid fats experiment, wouldn't liquid butter and solid butter really be the same, since they would both be in the same state at the temperature inside your body? So to do the comparison, you would need to choose something that is liquid at room temperature, such as olive oil. Were the fats Eddie was eating poly, mono, or saturated when he was having the troubles? It would seem like if they were poly, perhaps his body was trying to protect him from excessive – ? Or maybe it was insufficient bile to digest it? I have had friends of mine who have had their gall bladder removed tell me that sometimes if they eat something that doesn't agree with them, it just goes right through them.

  4. Noticed that I am also not as sore after weight training, also a lot more energy for it as well. Also noticed that I can eat a large amount of beef / eggs etc and go off and train and feel no discomfort. When I was eating a lot of veg, couldn't do that in the slightest and would feel terrible throughout the entire workout. Really glad I found out about the carnivore diet

  5. It takes a bit to increase bile salts and pancreatic enzyme production. Idk where people get their advice outside my server, but most are rushing fat increase before they are ready, resulting in diarrhea and expelling of bile salts that normally get recycled on top of pancreatic and liver function not being ideal beforehand. Steady increase over time with small meals spread out throughout the day when you first start out. If you try something, like taking fiber, you may solve one problem just to create another. Biggest problem is people trying to outsmart their body as if they can cheat reality.

  6. Dr Stephen Gundry mentioned that decoupling of mitochondria results in substantial energy wasting and thus burning fat, supposedly goat milk or A2 cant recall does a similar thing. Eddie is probably super hot body temp wise as his metabolism is roaring along.

  7. I'm not surprised that changing the state of fat intake didn't change for you. You've been keto for long enough that your intestinal biota, liver, and lymphatic system are optimized for handling lipids. (The second-most important function of the lymphatic system is its absorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins from the digestive system, then transporting those to the points at which the lymphatic system "dumps" into the veins. The fat-content of lymphatic fluid is a major characteristic distinguishing it from blood plasma.)

  8. Baker's hypothesis seems problematic, since all fats quickly get to body temp (98.5°F?). But maybe (unrendered) solid fats on meat include some proteinaceous cell matter that traps some of the "pure" fat.

  9. Calories are heat they have nothing to do with food or nutrition using them for any type of measurement is just simply wrong on a carnivore diet. It’s much better to measure food consumption by weight.

  10. I can smash endless protein and fat its awesome. I lose weight easily and if i over eat by a ton the next day I just look fuller as if I had a medium amount of carbs. Spoiler alert, I can never stop at a medium amount of carbs lol.

  11. Eddie likely needs to read up on gluconeogenesis. On a fat and protein only diet, or with very low carb, during a hard workout such as Eddie's or Dr. Baker's, gluconeogenesis will convert fat and/or protein to glucose. It does the same in a fight or flight situation. Your body will give you quick energy (using gluconeogenesis) so it is available in those situations. You are burning a lot of energy if you work out as hard as those two guys so your body compensates to give you the energy it needs. That's why glucose can be up a bit higher afterwards. A nice walk will generally bring it back down.

  12. I'm 65 a carnivore most of the time. I was diagnosed with diverticulosis in my 20's (and probably it was there before – I'm a Baker's baby born 2 months prem) and was also diagnosed in my late 40's with a 2cm gallstone, in my 50's with a degrading GB wall (I would love to have an ultrasound to see what's happening now). Anyway, this dietary pattern causes no GB pain and I have next to no bloading. It's taken me about a year to work out I need a lot more fat (butter, ghee, tallow, fat trimmings) to stop straining at stool (we probably need a new stool chart for carnivores esp. regarding volume and frequency). Initially, I took high-dose lipase enzymes as a precaution but I really do not need them and now take a protease digestive enzyme when I'm stressed to prevent any reflux. Too much water, I find can impede my digestion. I recently took part in a new gut microbiome test trial. Very high akkamansia, next to no lactobacillus and bifido. I have noticed if I eat fermented foods – kimchi etc. I bloat dramatically, suspecting too big a challenge to the now resident profile of strains (happy to share the test results with you). I'm also reminded that concerning individuality, Roger J Williams (the father of biochemical individuality) speaks to the different sizes and positions of stomachs and other organs and how this impacts the production and amounts of secretions – stomach acid, bile, and digestive enzymes a person will secrete and transit time. We are all an n=1 experiment and it is always interesting to hear other's experiences, as you say 'context and nuance'.

  13. I'm very positive about high protein and fat diets, but there's 99.9% chance that he overestimate his caloric intake for views.

Can he eat 10k calories one day? Sure.

Does he eats 10k EVERY single day? I can bet you anything that he doesn't.

Other than that, he is not a common 370 pound person, at least 250 pounds are lean mass, which increases his caloric budget massively, a few hours of exercise a day, which he does, at that weight with that much lean mass counts for another 2 or 3 thousand calories, thermogenic effect of protein also removes 10 to 15% of the calories he eats, and you can comfortably say that he can eat 6 or 7 thousand calories a day and be in a defict, without any other metrics, like food being expelled without being digested in the feces.
