He needs to leave. The fact that he has someone as a fall back means he will subconsciously think of her in their fights. He'll know that he won't be alone if he leaves and he knows no matter what he has someone.
Idk if that makes sense but once you create a backdoor the relationship is doomed. You'll start thinking that leaving will be easier than staying and then you stop fighting for your family.
