Why a Chinese American family is donating $5M to Black college students

In 1939, Emma and Gus Thompson, a Black couple in Coronado, California, rented out a home to the Dongs, a Chinese American family, in the wake of racially restrictive housing laws. Now, the Dongs are donating $5 million to Black college students as a thank you to the Thompsons.

  1. This is SUCH a beautiful story starting all those years ago from kindness, fairness and anti discrimination…….. wonderful full circle…..giving.

  2. This story illustrates what a lot of people want us to forget about the history of people of colour and of immigrants in the United States. It is that they were far more likely to support each other than fight each other in the face of racism. On the west coast white people might have lorded it over everyone else, but Hispanics, Native Indians, East Asians and Black Americans lived with a greater sense of community and mutual support. Today the narrative is all about dividing people into little groups and pitting them against each other. This is how black teens who should know better get to be pushing down elderly Japanese men in the name of COVID. Really glad this story has been preserved and is being shared, and kudos to the descendants of both the Dongs and Thompsons for living up to their family history.

  3. Its great to hear the Blacks and Chinese were/are helping each other despite the horrendous obstacles placed on them by the majority whites. That is classic America.

  4. This is a beautiful story. Those who are easily offended by this are the true racists. Wings of hospitality are named after those who gave a generous amount to the hospital, but a generous Chinese family gave millions to help black students in the name of a black family, that’s racist. What is wrong with you people?

  5. Absolutely beautiful. It started with the Thompson’s act of defiance by selling it to this family. And, I love that they acknowledge AND give back to honor that gesture. Both of these families exemplified what we can do when we work together. I would love a follow-up story where they catch up with some of the Thompson descendants… I think it would be cool to include them if any are still around.

  6. This is so beautiful. I'm sure that if more people traced their success back to black people they would be absolutely astonishingly wealthy. Black people have made contributions over the years that are just untold. If only more people would pay it forward ❤ good for them to never forget. Yes this absolutely should be made into a movie.

  7. This is the caliber of News that needs to become a major focus on all News Stations across the U.S.
These 2 amazing families are the kind of American citizens who lead by EXAMPLE & are still TRAILBLAZERS that we all need to learn about, especially in the field of EDUCATION!!
I hope the City of Coronado & their School Board create an inclusive & incredible education program based on their true past!

I have vacationed in Coronado for over 10 years & I knew the history of how this fancy hotel was built by immigrants & attended by the rich along with all their staff, housekeepers, nannies, butlers, etc.
    Great Story👍🤗👏👏!!

I think a video describing what your subjects escaped when they ran from mother land would get a lot more clicks and revenue for you
