Gambling Our Rights? (with Audie Cornish) | The Focus Group Podcast

Democrats’ spin holds that the calls for Joe Biden to drop out are driven by the media, while base Democratic voters beyond Washington are committed to seeing Biden as the nominee, and there will be a backlash if he isn’t. In a series of focus groups with black Democratic voters this week, we found the truth to be more complicated. Audie…

  1. Girl bye 👋🏾 Millions of voters voted for Biden/Harris in the primary. If you wanted someone different you should have run that perfect white ticket in the primaries🤷🏾‍♀️

  2. Sarah, really?? Senile, dementia??? And then you say not really And Repeat it? Stop it. I have been listening to many public spdakers, the mixups are rampant. Just be accurate instead of cruel and mistaken. Sheesh, show the grace you would hope to receive.

  3. Hey, thank Sarah, I'm for Biden and here's why: media is not covering each candidates and so no one seems to realize that as an older person, Biden is having more trouble with his stuttering challenge. I've listened to psychiatrists saying that Biden is just an older man. He is not cognitively effected. He is doing a great job as president and I think will do well in a second term. AND… he has a great team and he has Kamala! But, I'm panicked because in 2016, not enough people voted for Hillary (a white woman) and I have a feeling that not enough people will vote for Kamala (who I actually first supported when she was a candidate)(a black/brown woman)!

  4. At 55 minutes, the point about voters not knowing what Kamala is doing… I've heard this many times, too, usually from older voters. Younger voters see her on TikTok and Instagram Reels, talking about women's rights.

  5. So… 43 minutes into this, lots of discussion about Kamala not having a proven constituency among voters — young women seem to like her, and I'm not sure why this hasn't been mentioned. Kamala has spent years talking with young women about their rights. Young women are reportedly registering in droves. Maybe young women are her voting base.

  6. Good exchange. I like being able to listen to Audie for several minutes exchange of ideas and the Q&A sections. Thank you both. (And yes, I probably shouldn’t try to run the Country either.)

  7. Black women are realistic about the world Americans live in. They deal with reality every day in the real world, in their real jobs. Audie Cornish hit it on the head. White women do not think about this reality. Everyone wants Michelle Obama but forget how horribly she was treated when she was 1st Lady. And Black women felt it personally.
In a focus group, everyone is aware of how their viewed.
Watch one of your co-workers of color respond or react in meetings. Listen to conversations they have when their together. Trust, we are not in a post racial period. Racism is alive and doing well in America and Black and Brown people are well aware of it.

  8. WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? The debate was horribly formatted, the only back and forth they had was on golf and Trump lied so much it was insane to watch. THERE IS PLENTY TO TALK ABOUT THE CASE FOR BIDEN REMAINING IN THE TICKET. You’re missing the forest searching for one tree.

  9. Readin the comments…i find it hilarious that people are stating AGE, RACE and GENDER as a preface to their comments. It shows how these constructs have begun to critically shape our views. In Chicago there was a fascinating exhibit. It showed the human body, sans skin. Just bones, muscle, veins, arteries. No mention of race. Just the obvious gender. The artists point…to show we are all…hunan. There is a 0.07% difference genetically due to race. Its based in science. The differences we emot or project are based upon man made construct. People are voting against their own self interest based on 3 criteria. Race, gender, and perceived prejudices.

  10. Did anyone catch the ending when Sarah admitted to influencing the comments from the focus group she played. She is playing the ones she wants us to hear. Biden / Harris gets the most votes. I support Kamala also, but the Biden / Harris ticket is stronger than a Harris / TBA later Vice President!

  11. I have just come to realize that I have been upset at the constant disrespect this channel has towards President Biden and then I looked at your viewership. This channel has less than 300 subscribers. This just proves that this channel is not part of the solution but it is the problem. This channel is designed to create a division within the Democratic Party. A Trojan Horse channel.

  12. This was a good show it raised some interesting new points and perspectives and reinforced old ones. I'm curious though will this strategy of crisis management, from existential election to existential election, ever remove the authoritarian threat or are people just going to have to accept living in this dynamic for ever?

  13. Feels kind of wild to me how so many people feel like replacing a candidate 4 months before an election is too close and not enough time, while in the UK they had an election in 2 months, France in one month, including the whole campaining and stuff. Maybe you guys in the US could try a snap election once in a while to freshen things up, otherwise it just feels like a constant never ending campaigning and attention seekeing (elections, midterms, etc).

  14. For decades now, every campaign that democrats have run with a black person on the ticket was victorious, every ticket without a black person LOST. Gore/Lieberman lost – Kerry/Edwards lost – OBAMA/Biden won – OBAMA/Biden won against Romney – Clinton/Kaine lost – Biden/HARRIS won. Having her under Bidens ticket clearly won't save us this time but having her at the top can and will. Shapiro for her VP.

  15. This is hands down one of the most – if not the most – intelligent & on point analysis I have yet to hear.

It is interesting that Sara is surprised about the black voters and VP Harris. My first thought was how she herself expressed things that came across as completely dismissing VP Harris.

The white swinging focus group was deeply disturbing and difficult listening to. Anyone who is honest heard how they never even tried to research and understand the truth about VP Harris. I lived in CA when VP Harris was AG. I watched her closely as a Senator.

It is disturbing to me that no matter how brilliant and accomplished African-Americans are RACISM is a reality that we are deeply in denial about.

No not everybody wants Michelle Obama either.

Sexism is prevalent in EVERY culture, she is NOT her husband even IF she is smarter.

AND Michelle Obama is smart enough not to put herself in a position for a country where too many people are racist and dumb enough to vote for an authoritarian administration.

To the contrary, Sara misses how white men like Trump get a pass as opposed to white men like Biden.

    However, I absolutely adore Sara.

  16. Boomers enjoying their wealth? No one I know. There were so many broad generalizations in this interview it was hard to take. Broad generalizations like the ones we heard here are not accurate.

  17. THERES NOBODY WHO COMES EVEN CLOSE TO BE AS FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE 52YRS HUGE RECEIPTS AS BIDEN NO ONE NONE IF HE NEEDS HELP HARRIS IS LEARNING A TON AN CAPABLE. STOP F. WITH AMERICA BUDENS EXCELLENT

  18. Am I the only one who thinks Jon Tester might work? I know he doesn't have the name recognition, but that could be remedied. Not too far left and he might be able to bring some never Trumpers and independents. I've always enjoyed listening to Audie on NPR.

  19. I’m not having the conversation in my head. The debate was a “moment in time”. I don’t get this stupid debate. The next day Biden showed up and got back at it again. Everyone seems to be ignoring his performance since the debate. He has been hitting runs. Get over it!!

  20. The point that Audie brings up about black women being disheartened by what they think people will say about Kamala is pretty depressing. This country has a long way to go before people won't feel free to disparage her race or gender, and instead just talk about what she does or does not accomplish.

  21. No you can’t compare Joe with John McCain sorry!

Joe has proven himself and this idiotic. Sarah if you had to do multiple focus groups to find this out it simply means you aren’t even smart enough for what you are doing 😅
