Hawa Makes Lahoh (Somali Pancakes) | From the Test Kitchen | Bon Appétit

Join Hawa Hassan in the Bon Appétit Test Kitchen as she makes Lahoh, Somali pancakes. Lahoh is one of the most common breakfast dishes in Somalia, but unlike other pancakes, these guys go through 2 hours of fermentation before cooking.

  1. Let it be known that Hawa presented to BA a fully realized pitch for a segment called Hawa At Large, where she would make African dishes and talk to guests about African cuisines and cultures. Not only they rejected her pitch, they used a photo of her with the BA chefs for diversity points, shot three videos with her AND paid her only $400 for each video. She’s since sworn off of working with BA ever again, and we all missed out on her radiant screen presence and African recipes. Shame on you BA.

  2. I just want tell you guys. This pankack is. Nothing you ever had. If you don t belief me. Go. Try it. Loxoo in. Somalish. You just ask. Your. Somali. Friend wherever you are I garantie you will make it for your. Kids girls. Love it. Like ooohhh. We drink it wit three oohhh. Best breakfast ever 💗💓💓💓💪❤💗💗💗❤❤💗

  3. Love you Hawa…. this is a new take on lahoh or anjera, the whole blender part with the onion and spices is not big in Somalia, they do it with just simple yeast, salt and in the end drizzle it with oil and sugar, tastes out of this world for breakfast especially when it’s well made.

  4. You can see she's not even professional when it comes to cooking Somali food. I don't know where she was born and where she was learning, but I don't think she even knows how to cook Somali food.I look at multiple video. her video cooking technique is so horrible and terrified. even to watch🤢🤢🤢😨🤮🤮🤮🤧🤧

  5. Hey remember that time a bunch of chefs at ba quit because they weren't offered equal pay? And remember all those getting screwed were non-white?

  6. I grew up eating this at my best friend's house, back in the Netherlands. It tasted so good, that I still have that memory as it was yesterday. Unfortunately I can't get hold of all the ingredients, so unable to make it myself. Men I miss it 😜 great job Hawa

  7. I’d rather’ve have made this than the gourmet pop tarts and hot pockets… can’t @bonappetit ask us to make culturally diverse treats during quarantine times?

  8. I don’t know, I’m not even going to comment on the BIPOC issue that everyone seems to have a problem with, but I’d be happy to have someone film me making a pancake for $400. I know I’ve worked harder days for that amount of money. After all, didn’t she agree to that amount before making the video? Don’t throw everyone at BA under the bus because someone was insensitive over a decade ago. She’s a beautiful women and well spoken. I’m sorry she felt she couldn’t stick it out longer than 3 videos to see if something more would come of it. We can’t always get what we want immediately. I don’t think BA is as insidious as people are accusing them of being.

  9. For some context, I got paid $500 to be in a video for a messenger app for literally 2 seconds and this talented, skilled, highly experienced QUEEN only got $400 a video. Please do better BA

  10. Why am just NOW seeing these video pushed Heavily on my feed? Side eye … don’t just change the algorithm BA, actually any more people color!
AND PAY THEM THE SAME RATES AS THEIR CIS- WHITE MALE COUNTERPARTS!
