I don't feel sorry for the Chemist/Herbalist at all. As his friend pointed out, he had the resources to marry the girl even in the previous year but didn't. Who even knows if he would've even married her. He just saw how valuable the girl was when competition arose. This is a lesson to those guys who've been stringing ladies along without having a definite intent of marrying them. The king is certainly going to have it rough in the beginning of their marriage considering the circumstance.
