Somaliland marks 33rd independence anniversary


The Republic of Somaliland is celebrating 33 years of independence from the Federal Republic of Somalia.
This celebration was held in the capital, Hargeisa, and was led by President Musa Bihi with the citizens and the military in attendance.
The event is meant to mark what citizens call Independence Day which is contested by Somalia….

Ex-British Somaliland Protectorate has not separated from ex-Italian Somaliland but withdrew from a failed, unratified Union with ex-Italian Somalia, 1960-1991 after the Somali Republic collapsed with the overthrow of dictator Siad Barre and the insuing civil war in Somalia proper. Somaliland restored its independence which it officially attained from the United Kingdom in June 26, 1960. Somaliland was a British Protectorate 1884-1960, a period of 76 years. Somaliland has not been a genric part of a country called Somalia any time in its entire history. Somaliland had its own distinct, cultural, historical and demographic existence before colonialism. There was no Somali national state before colonialism in mid-19th Century. Every group of tribes with a coherent culture and dialect settled in a wide land to graze its sheep and camels and had 1-3 seaports for their exports and imports. In fact it was the colonial powers who formed national states out og groups of tribes with a coherent culture, extended territory.

  20. Just a correction it is NOT independence from fedral somalia because there was no fedral before 2000 but May 18 is returning from the 1960 failed union with somalia
