A rare bout of icy weather hit the town of Ain Sefra in northern Algeria, covering parts of the sandy slopes in snow on 7 January.

  1. History in the making. There was snow in the Sahara in 2016 too. All this snow reflects light, which cools the planet. It doesn't take many years like this to trigger the next ice age. Once there is more frequent snow at lower latitudes than previously, there is a cascading effect.
