Nigeria succeeds because of the full eco system of artistes, beatmakers, producers, choreographers, and video filmmakers!
So you have TG Omori, Jyde Ajala, Poco Lee, Don Jazzy, Kel P, Pheelz, Young Jon, Fiokee( guitarist) being stars in their own right within the Naija music industry!
The artistes themselves also key in onto each other and I believe Nigerian artists collabo with each other more than any other artistes from other countries in Africa!
This sets the template for recognition and promotion of the Naija music industry at home and abroad!
Sarkodie is a legend and he is doing right on his own. But I remember Fuse ODG blew up in UK even before Dbanj. What I am saying is, any African artist that wants to blow up must face the international market. That is how Wizkid, Davido and Burns did it. I think Kwaku The Traveller is also ding that now.
Every time I hear people talk about this topic they usually miss a big part of it… They tend to focus on the marketing and promotions but fall short on the product aspect. Now the product isn't just about how sweet the song is or the productions… The product is accessibility… There are outliers and I'll mention them later. A key factor to accessibility is language and Nigerians have it mastered… Nigerians use language from all over the Africa to connect… And we do it with the most accessible emotion – Love… Check the numbers… How many top songs or artists from Nigeria have used other African language variations of love, I love you, beautiful woman and the likes in their songs, Odoyewu, Odo, Nakupenda, Je t'aime, amore… These words and phrases are mainstays in Nigerian music to the point that some would argue that some of Nigerian words…. It's not chance, it's strategy… When Yemi Alade releases a French version of her song it's not for fun, it's strategy. Imagine a Kenyan babe hearing nakupenda, wewe, matako and co in a Nigerian song, she is intrigued…she feels seen from so far away, she feels her culture has influence. Imagine such girls getting moved to by naija boys, and they play such songs them, connections happen, she wants to hear more songs like that and before you know it she has a playlist of naija songs…how many non Nigerian artists have used to words, Ifunanya, obim, omo todun, tomato jos, and the likes in their songs… Slim to none. We do this even within our country because we have tons of languages and we want to connect with the entire nation… That's why you hear Davido sing about Chioma my lover, or Flavour sing about Folake, heck you'll think Burna Boy is yoruba with the amount of yoruba he speaks… It's about accessibility. Now for the outliers…Olamide, Asake, Phyno and co… The acceptance that Asake receives today despite singing mostly in Yoruba is in part to the ground work paid before him… Artists like Da Grin crawled so artists like Reminisce and Olamide could walk and run and so Asake can now fly… These forerunners wore the badge of local rappers proudly despite understanding that it would limit them to some degree but in so doing they created loyal fans in the "local" space… And in the case of Olamide he used his light to shine on others even when those he shared his light with would better bigger than his… It's why he is the respected boss that he his today… And when these "local" guys music ventured far, there was always a Nigerian willing to translate. Ghanaians come across as guarded with their languages, even amongst themselves, you wouldn't know there is more than twi in Ghana and your folks outside Ghana… don't do a good job educating the world about your people… Till this day many Nigerians that use the word Odo, odoyewu don't know it it's Twi, Ga, Fanti or what it's variations are in the other languages. You can emulate the marketing of Nigerian but if you don't emulate the strongest factor of our marketing which is language accessibility, you'll always fall short.
