George Building Collapse | Construction workers trapped under 3000 tons of concrete


The Minister of Employment and Labour, Thulas Nxesi, media briefing was delayed.

In the interim SABC reporter Lwando Nomoyi gave us an update on the rescue efforts.

He says that the families of the construction workers believed to be trapped under the rubble receive 2-hourly updates from the officials.

  1. The reason why you have crap workmanship is the owner of the business knows nothing about building he was a pen pusher and lost his job and they employ workers(cheap labour)that knows absolutely nothing in their so called trades the real tradesman are sitting at home

  2. I was born and raised in George where my dad worked as a building inspector from the late 70's to early 2000's. I distinctly remember visiting building sites, with my dad during holidays . You would often see a site stand still for a week or two after every foundation/slab was cast. During this period the slab would be kept wet to slow curing and keep temperatures down in the concrete. It no longer happens.

There will be lots of talk, lots of investigations, lots of reviews, lots of declarations about "leaving no stone unturned", etc., but under the S.A. criminal justice system, nothing will happen to those parties responsible (if there are any). Sad, really sad. Accountability is not a value in S.A.
