Yes!!! Girls
I've never been happier to hear young girls talking about a topic that many shy away from because of the fear of upsetting some people. I really share the same sentiments on this topic.
What an insightful conversation, truly learned a lot.
You lovely ladies are wise beyond your age. I’m in my 30’s and I’m learning so much from you. Wow ❤
"you don't need to take away from someone's experience to justify your experience" let her cook👏👏👏
You guys are spitting on womanhood👏
with the womanhood topic I feel like emotional hears would hear something totally out of context, this conversation needs maturity and emotional intelligence, but you guys are so well spoken. You cooked!!!!
I think there’s confusion coming from a mix up between gender dysphoria with cisgender queerness? While a trans woman might explain her experience better, I'll try to provide a jumping-off point for those genuinely interested.
For context, during the early stages of foetal development, the default path is toward a female phenotype. That is, we were all female at one point while we were cooking in our mothers' wombs. So how are we assigned our sex? Hormones known as androgens (e.g., testosterone) play a vital role in "masculinising" the body and brain of the developing foetus. However, there can be variations or discrepancies in the timing or effectiveness of androgen exposure, leading to situations where the body and brain develop along separate gender trajectories. This is all to say, people can literally be born with the brain of one sex but the body of the opposite, and this is the basic pathophysiology of gender dysphoria, a disorder with very real clinical manifestations and complications and is the backbone of transgenderism. So they’re not looking for an identity, they are very much aware of who they are supposed to be and it’s not their assigned gender at birth. The difference between transgenderism and cisgender queerness lies in the fact that cisgender queer people’s perceived gender identity aligns with their sex. But they express their gender identity in non-normative or non-conforming ways, including sexually.
With all that out of the way, I want to preface this by saying I love the podcast and I love the hosts, but I’m compelled to say that I not only disagree but that you're both wrong about this particular issue. Firstly, the application of black face vs transgenderism is a very harmful thing to equate. Gender dysphoria is a medical disorder with a high mortality rate if left untreated. Show me one racist killing themselves because they can’t mock black people? They literally need gender affirming care to live, they have no choice. Moreover, trans women are more marginalised than cisgender women so with peace and love, you’re speaking from a point of privilege. Transgender people are more likely not to receive adequate medical care. They’re more likely to be victims of domestic abuse, they’re more likely to be victims of sexual battery and assaults, they’re more likely to be victims of violent crime, in fact, this one is so bad that women are killed because they get mistaken for being trans sometimes. And when transphobes do actually get their target right, their case is more likely to go unreported. Feel free to fact check me on this
Denying the womanhood of trans women is not only hurtful but perpetuates discrimination and marginalisation that allows these heinous acts to be made against them. Especially when womanhood is not solely defined by physical characteristics. There are trans women who present more femininely than cisgender women, enough that people don’t even realise they’re transsexual and in rare cases, there are trans women who are born with vaginas, like—? 😭 They’re not a monolith and womanhood clearly isn’t limited to their gonads. It encompasses a complex interplay of social, cultural, and personal factors. Transgender women live their lives as women, navigate the world as women, and thus can and DO experience the same societal expectations, pressures, and inequalities as cisgender women.
I’ll even go so far as to challenge the notion that you need to have a shared experience in order to truly be considered a woman, (even though I’ve given multiple examples where trans women can have shared experience) because in attempting to define womanhood and identify commonalities among women, you inadvertently create exclusionary norms. By categorising certain experiences or expressions of gender as more authentic or legitimate than others, you unintentionally reinforce societal forces that enforce restrictive gender roles and expectations. This can lead to the marginalisation or delegitimisation of even cisgender women whose experiences do not fit within these established norms. Women like Caster Semenya, come to mind.
