Why 9-8-8 Is Vital For Black Mental Health Support

Have you heard about 9-8-8? The triple-digit number was launched in part to address the urgent need for mental health support in Black communities. Black people are far less likely to seek care, during a mental health crisis. Only 25% of African Americans seek mental health treatment, compared to 40% of white Americans.

  1. I've literally chosen not to call the mental health hotline in times of crisis because they all insist on having eight eight in their numbers. Like, who first made this decision and did they not know the connotations of that number?

Convinced those hotlines collect peoples data and put them on a list of "undesirables" that the fascists will attack one day.

  2. Let's continue to shine a light on this issue.
I thought you were goin to say, " black people in the USA are far more likely to suffer mental health crises" 😢

  3. A man hung himself from a tree in the town I live in. Everywhere you could see comments that black men would never do such a thing.

The subsequent investigation revealed he had earlier cut himself, confided to health care workers that he had suicidal ideations, had lit himself on fire.

  4. I’m a former cop and I think this kind of thing has been needed for a very long time.
There should be absolutely no reason to fear seeking help with a crisis.
I’ve seen people in crisis engaging with law enforcement and then they saw no way to deescalate… and it leads to tragedy.
People who maybe just needed to talk to someone without the presence of guns.
When citizens chant “defund the police”, this is what they mean. It doesn’t mean we don’t need law enforcement. It means that law enforcement isn’t enough.
