I've dealt with exactly the situations you described, being the only woman or (somewhat) gay person in the room. It's just a gut punch… So I can't imagine being the only person of colour in that position.

I agree with Ben. People want authenticity and to know the person talking is a real person. Too much polish makes it too close to cable and takes away from it feeling independent and genuine information and discussion.
