The GP 100 is the same gun it has always been from 1985 when first introduced and has NEVER been discontinued or “reintroduced”. The lock work/trigger has NEVER been changed. They have always had a very nice and slick trigger mechanism but maybe a little heavy. Your one sample from years ago that you did not care for was apparently a fluke. Your understanding of it’s history, “changes”, and nonexistent “production pauses” are not accurate….not even close.
I bought a stainless 4.2 inch gp100. What a pos. The security six I traded in was phenomenally better and was made in the 80's. Two days after purchase the cylinder became bound. There was damage on the frame and the rear sight roll pin protruded both sides enough to cut your finger, that I missed when looking at it since it took 7 hours to get help to purchase at bass pro. There were metal shavings in the underlug cut out for the ejector rod. The open button was crunchy, and the crown was half cut. It spent 5 weeks back at Ruger for repair. They replaced the hammer, which is so wide it is very hard to pull back. They fixed the button and cylinder issue, and refinished the frame. But did not fix the crown. For 1000$ I am disgusted. Ruger is off the table for me ever again.
Don't get me wrong… like your vids just don't like that gun…. almost as bad as a Taurus but at least the taurus tend to not be so clunky bulky. You can buy a used Trooper mk3 for about the same and have something to be proud of.
Ruger quality has slipped so much that it would not take much to 'improve' they are still clunky. I can't shoot the guns I have now enough sooo… owning a Ruger handgun? naa.. the only two I have are 'dead mans guns' one from my gramps (Mk1 22) and a BH (early) in 30 carbine that was a deathbead gift from a good friend (RIP Mike)
That was fun I felt as if I was right there with yall, I purchased my 357 mag GP 100 and I love it.was expensive but well worth it, and it is truly a gun for life well made.

The 686 was made to fix the issues of K frame .357’s not really being up to the task of .357 ammo steadily. The reason for the K frame .357 was the N frame was too heavy. The L frame is a great compromise.
Most people agree the GP100 didn’t really need to come along. The Security Six guns were S&W K frame size but way stronger. But the GP100’s were cheaper to make than the Six guns, and Ruger figured they had to come up with a direct competition to the 686 since most buyers would figure the Six shared the weakness of the K frame .357.
Ruger brought out the GP100 in 1985. They also never discontinued the GP100, nor brought it back. It's been in prodiction since 1985.They have come out with different versions of the revolver, especially for distributors. Your version is on their website, and looks to be the same as one (of many) they make for Talo Distributor. They also continue to make revolvers like the originals.
Very welcomed information on Hartford Arms / High Standard. I have a couple of High Standards in my collection including a Model B, that looks quite similar to your gun. I will be on the look out for one of these to add to the accumulation. Hope we see more of this type of content from cousin Ed. I just turned 74 last month (December 2023) and am always interested in learning more about the guns that were so plentiful in my youth. Way back when pterodactyls filled the skys.

Yes it did come out in 85, and I snapped it up as soon as it did, and to my knowledge, they have never been out of production.

Ruger probably is making little better stuff I still do not trust ruger they can keep their investment cast STUFF.
I don't know about 1985 but I have a GP-100 I bought in 2009 and the trigger is just fine. All round, a very good gun.

My Ruger GP 100 is in 40 S&W / 10 MM uses moon clips Blue 5 inch barre and i love it
