Humongous Subsidies in the Power Sector Will Kill the Nigerian Economy – Oke

The current structure of the power sector in Nigeria is not sustainable. Subsidy in electricity presupposes that we have a constant supply which is not the case

  1. We just continue to punish the poor unnecessarily in Nigeria because our so called "leaders" simply look for the easiest way out of any problem. How much of the Billions they claim on paper to have used as electricity subsidy was actually used as electricity subsidy; they know this; but just like oil subsidy; the poor must pay for the "sins" of the "HIGH" and "MIGHTY". Hmm. May God help us o.

  2. What i don't understand is after the removal of fuel subsidy, school fees were increased, electricity tariff is about to be increased three fold, can't the government used the gain on fuel subsidy removal to cushion the burden on the masses?. This government is evil and heartless.

  3. This Professor's English pronunciation is atrocious! Apart from the well-known "Yoruba H-Factor", he pronounces "which" as "wish", "that" as "dat", "the" as "di"; to mention but a few. A Professor? As a Yoruba man myself, I am embarrassed. As a Nigerian, I am disappointed.

  4. But there is money to pad the budget, build houses for vp and p, buy jeeps for first lady and others, etc. If you gather all these, the subsidies can remain but this government is good at running away from taking responsibility.

  5. Nigeria has people problems, dishonest bunch everywhere. They talk about restructuring every day.

How's this ignorant, Prof. saying, "Nigerians are willing to pay more for constant electricity." They will do more illegal connections to get the electricity when income is poor.

  6. Defraying the cost of meters from the cost of consumed electricity did not work. In many instances, members of the public buy transformers, cables and electric poles. These costs are not defrayed from monthly electricity bills.

  7. Countries are resorting to alternative means for generating electricity, nigeria own na to remove subsidy to make life more unbearable for citizens… countries are creating massive solar farms for generating more alternative emergy, wind generation, steam generation etc….NNPC warri generates it's own electricity from steam, as at 2012 they had uninterrupted power supply, why cant the govt look for ways of exploring and replicating such alternatives????

  8. Hear in America, the government gives subsidies to just about all corporations, such as the oil companies and the farmers. Natural gas is very cheap for us because we produce a lot of it. Not to mention the subsidies the gas company gets. If you are a elderly and can not afford gas ,the government would give it to you free or at a big discount. Nigeria wastes a lot of money on nonsense. Every country should provide energy and food for all of its citizens. Nigeria should be one of the richest countries in the world.

  9. So called Professors that cant proffer Solution to resolving Challenges in the Society. Toronto Professor/s everywhere…..

An envisaged 1Trillion USD economy without Power. How possible is that ??? Where has it happened in the World ?

  10. @Rufai, I think it is somewhat disrespectful to tell your guest! A professor! An acclaimed energy expert! That all he is speaking is grammar!

To make it worst “let me make your argument better” some of this comments are unguided and unnecessary! Pls watch it!

  11. Nigeria is a failed state, it look as if we don't have any natural resources like gas that can generate electricity 24/7 light, 😢😢,every day different stories. What a country 😮

  12. There are 3 fundamental problems. Nigeria already has generation capacity of 15,000mw: ✔
So first, the grid should be upgraded to be able to carry the 15, 000mw. Currently it can't even carry more than 4,000mw.
Second, Gencos should be allowed to sell at fair market price (cost of generation plus profits which can be regulated: US takes this approach). This will icentivice investors.
Finally, DISCOS should be allowed the same approach: recover the cost of distribution and a regulated profit after cost.

  13. Our elites and political leaders a mentally lazy and are wicked bunch, they have got novel ideas all they do is copy and paste. I don't believe every commodity produced in Nigeria should be pegged to the dollar. it shameful that we are still on 5000 megawatts for 200 millions Nigeria. Minimum wage is 30 thousand naira, yet the government is constantly fueling inflation.

  14. The reason why some countries are behind because they don't care about global best practice for selfish reason.what you seeing as a problem today they are many countries that have pass through that stage.no body no it all .a good leader is not perfect but the one that find out how things are done in a easy way.great men are always interested in difficult problem.the level of difficult problem you solve determine the level of your training.I don't consider how big you are either small or big.the level of problem you solve is what will make me to know the level of your training and integrity.

  15. Nigeria is a supermarket, our leaders are using the country to do business for themselves, imagine subsidy was removed, people can no longer run generators, now they want to increase electricity consumption so Nigerians will be kept in darkness to enable them perfect all their atrocities

  16. I hate to hear that the price of gas or petrol is in international price.

We own this resource for God's sake.

We deserve to benefit from it , not a case of those who don't have the natural resource.

WE DESERVE a lesser cost compared to the international market.

  17. Crooks stealing from Nigerian's and poor nigerian in the name of working for state Government . Shame shameless shamelessly. This is much more than greed Mr. Rufai. They are Muderer's

  18. Haha what nigeria economy? This place is too corrupt. This is what happens with old men who are used to stealing with impunity.

The colonial masters had electricity 200 years ago.

  19. I think the National grid should be scrapped and regional and state grids put in place. Sam Amadi has already stated that Nigeria must move away from a nationwide electricity programme that is not sustainable and beyond Nigeria's industrial capability. States and Local governments can more than meet their local energy requirements in the South of Nigeria. The Nigerian government can support energy development in the North if it cannot do so. It doesn't make sense to generate electricity in Lagos Egbin power station and transmit it via TCN to Maiduguri in Bornu state.
