The theory that Thutmose III destroyed her name from the record out of spite is the one put forth by the early 20th century archeologists. They pictured Hatshepsut as a usurping woman, who held Thutmose III back, until her death. They just couldn't imagine a respectful co-regency of an aunt & nephew.
Most modern scholars and archeologists believe it was done to clean up the lineage. The fact that he placed himself beside her in death, is a good example that he loved and respected her. No hate.
To add to this, some believe it wasn't even Thutmose III, but his son Amenhotep II who defaced her name and monuments. Evidence of this is that he was co-regent at the time of the defacement, the last 2 years of his father's reign. And also, the he also laid claim to the monuments as his.
Holy fuck that song went hard
Rest in peace, Watcher 🙁
I wanted to note that the defacements of Hatshepsut's monuments occurred near the end of Thutmose III's reign, when he was co-regent with his son Amenhotep II. So, some historians believe that it was Amenhotep who tried to strike her from the record, especially as he diminished the power and influence of women in his own court (such as by not writing down their names, and removing certain ceremonial titles historically given to queens).
I was at the Royal Ontario Museum recently, and they have a display for Hatshepsut, and it was so cool to see. You can actually see sections that had been carved away by thutmosa III to hide her legacy. Entire sections of carvings now blank
I think your channel & programming is one of the BEST to come out of the last Decade! I thoroughly enjoy EVERY episode, and "B BOY" is amazing!!! Thanks for taking the time to create such wonderful shows and doing the research on so many topics!
24:44 unless the snake is a royal python aka ball python. Then the kid will be fine and have a new friend.
Sounds like she got the Trump treatment
i cant be the only one who caught the "my WiFe" bit
5:54 he talks about this in the podcast
wait omg is this the origin of the beef boy nickname
I always come back to this video, because the song is an absolute banger.
I just learned today that she was Moses’ adoptive mother. I was blown away! I’ve watched this a couple of times and never realized who she was. So we HAVE heard of her, just not by name.
One of my favorite songs from puppet history!!!! Shane kicks ass
wish the song was on spotify so so so bad
She may have almost gotten erased from history, but at least she didn't get eaten by the British as a fake eternal life potion so who's the real winner
28:10 damn i thought the professor will actually say ryan’s iconic buzzfeed unsolved line 😂
I watch this show like other people watch sports, or the olympics. "I would've answered that question easily" or "I would have TOTALLY been super close on that free write" as if I would not be equally clueless.
I forgot this episode was the one where Ryan got his nickname. The birth of Beef Boi
I love watching this knowing history stuff already so I can 🤨😬 at people when they don’t know stuff
It was actually very common for Pharoahs to destroy records of those that came before them. Even for the ones that were legitimately the first born son, they often destroyed the accomplishments of their fathers and take credit for their accomplishments.
Women were the first pharaohs. The term refers to the head of the household. It’s not a title of kingship.
Is it canon that the professor raises spiders in his backyard like chickens to eat for protein?
I just wanted to say I’m going to Egypt in May and were it not for this show, I wouldn’t have known to look up Hatshepsut and whether or not I can go see any remaining record of her. I will be going to see her mortuary temple near Luxor, thank you watcher gang 🤍
I actually knew about Hatshepsut because there was a documentary about her run on Danish Television like, 15 or so years ago that i remember like 30 seconds of, talking about a female Pharaoh who had her Statues changed to Male, so it's very fun that now there's a 30 minute video i can watch to learn more!
“Like if the king were also the Pope” Well about that… he is. The Pope is also King of Vatican City, making it the only Absolute non-hereditary elected monarch in the world.
i had no idea hatshepsut was found not that long ago i thought she was like the main girl boss of history
Fun fact, her mummy is smiling. I saw her in Cairo at the museum before she and the other pharaohs were re-interred in their new digs.
Fun fact! Queen Elizabeth I also did this sort of artistic portryal of herself as a man or more accurately showcasing herself through the same social codes and norms in art as her contemporary male rulers did through the use of many artistic shorthands in portraits portraying her!
this is by far by fav puppet history song
The origin of Beef Boy. Legendary.
Book of life did it first and better
I think about this episode anytime Egypt or its history are mentioned. I think it's really awesome that because Shane did this episode, Hatshepsut is as well known now- 3500 years later- as she was in Egypt in her time (according to population estimates of the time and this video's views). And I love the idea that because of us who watched it, she not only gets her good afterlife, but she's better remembered than most of the 170 other pharaohs. Obviously Egypt is biblically famous for some awful stuff under the pharaohs, but I feel like we can confidently name Hatshepsut one of the greatest as far as how she looked after her people, family, culture, and economy.
Awww… poor "beef man"! 🙁
So HOW do we know everything about Hatshepsut now then, if her 'records' were erased???
After going through all the puppet histories chronologically, I finally discovered where the Beefboy nickname came from! Woo
I learned about her in middle school but i didn't know about forgetting her would doom her. Now i try to think of her, everyday.
Considering the life expectancy for ancient egyptians and ancient people alike, she was pretty old when she died….. and especially to have used one of the most carcinogenic substances known to man, she must have really had some God in her 💀
We all give her a tiny thought by remembering and getting stuck in our heads the song that Shane wrote about her
I really wanted somebody to write Ptolemy multiple times in that first segment
Not my watching this to study about Hatshepsut for my art history class.
Professor: and when the spiders get good and fat I kind of….
Raynn: oh
