Somaliland: 'the non-country' at the centre of a row – BBC Africa

It has a president, holds regular elections, has an Army and even its own currency. On paper, Somaliland looks just like any ordinary country, but it’s not recognised as such by any other nation.

Somalia considers it an integral part of its territory and so does the African Union, although Somaliland declared its independence in 1991. All…

  2. In June 26, 1960 Somaliland got its independence from Great Britain and in July 1, 1960 Somalia which was under the trusteeship of Italy united with Somaliland.which was an independent state for 5 days. The union was named Republic of Somalia. In 1969 a fascist military system took over and was ruling until 1991 with an iron hand. In 1988 the military dictator’s army waged war against the Somaliland civilians and committed genocide by killing hundreds of thousands of people and making millions of people flee to the neighbouring Ethiopia, and destroyed the major cities. In 1991 Somali National Movement defeated the Sanguinary army of the dictator and declared its independence again. Somalia was in civil wars for the last 33 years when Somaliland set up a peaceful democratic nation by electing 5 presidents, a 2 house parliament, having its army, its own flag and money and its municipality governments. Somaliland had nothing to do with Somalia for 34 years

  3. Somaliland would be the 55th state of Africa and there is nothing that the failed state of Somalia can do about it. For 30plus years there is not a single Somalia Representative that stepped foot on somaliland soil but they say we are one 😂😂😂 how ironic , but this is chess not checkers. for my own benefit that 20km of sea access I signed for recognition got hasan shiikh shiiting his pants 😂😂😂😂 I might give ethopia 30 more km for Free Qaad too. Darood n Qarax wayn suck onn it 🤬🤬🤬 SNM RULE THE EAST

  4. The complaint from Somalia cannot change the agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland.
We know that Somalia has no political energy, it is a black spot in the world. It is awaiting the hands of the international community.
Somalia is a government in name only, it has no power.

  5. Somaliland has the prerogative to determine its own destiny independently. There is no desire for reunification with Somalia, and independence isn't the only option; instead, there's the prospect of integrating with the Republic of Ethiopia within a federal framework. This option is endorsed by the United Nations, affirming our entitlement to merge with Ethiopia as one unified state. Economically and culturally, we are mutually beneficial partners, complementing each other's strengths.

  6. i think alot of african countries need to seperate there are to much tribes in africa to be making one large countries with many tribes in it i think every tribe should make his own small country that is the only way africa is going to work and end of manu conflicts. why do you think the west made african countries becouse they know it will end in bloodshed between africans. and its working. i think somalia and sonaliland should not be one country but seperate countries becouse its different tribes and even not the same dialect
