That stat mentioned near the end of the '87 Open is crazy, and even in a sport where over 100 compete every week (up to 156 at events such as the U.S. Open and The Open), one that strains the bounds of the laws of probability. 18 consecutive different major champions in a row, with Faldo becoming #18. Ironically, the man that started that run of 18 consecutive different major champions would also be the one to finish that streak, as Larry Nelson, who's 1983 U.S. Open triumph started that incomprehensible 5-year run of different major champions, would win the '87 PGA Championship at PGA National in a playoff over Lanny Wadkins, who was bidding to become the 19th consecutive different major champion.
