  1. Weird list. Some of it I agree with, Brando was a great actor indeed. Chaplin was also one of the best, most creative and influential. But please, Bing Crosby was a dancer, not much of an actor. Most of these pple, Bogey especially, Cary Grant, Clark Gable were mainly stars, they played themselves. And how on earth could you leave out Olivier who was and still is considered the greatest Actor of all. He had a huge range. In many films, you don't even recognise him.But the biggest omission, to my mind, is Charles Laughton, a great, great actor, maybe even greater than Olivier, bc more natural. He could play anything, make you laugh out loud, make you hate him he played such a vile villain, or he could break yr heart. He was homely and fat, but he could act circles around the "pretty boys."Daniel Day-Lewis, probably the greatest actor of today said of him, 'He was probably the greatest film actor who came from the golden age of Hollywood."

  2. I would say 1 Chaplin, 2 John Wayne, 3 Clark Gable, 4 Bing Crosby, 5 Robert Taylor, 6 Alan Ladd, 7 Burt Lancaster, 8 Robert Mitchum, 9 Frank Sinatra, 10 Jeff Chandler, 11 Charlton Heston, 12 Gary Cooper, 13 James Cagney, 14 James Stewart, 15 Audie Murphy, 16 Tony Curtis, 17 Cary Grant, 18 Bob Hope, 19 Victor Mature, 20 John Ireland.

  3. My favorites: Charlie Chaplin, Cary Grant, Henry Fonda, Paul Newman, Tom Hanks, Gregory Peck, Al Pacino, Leonardo Di Caprio and now Cillian Murphy.

  4. Of these ten, my favorites are Cary Grant, and James Stewart, with Humphrey Bogart, Spencer Tracy, Henry Fonda, and Marlon Brando as my next favorites on the list.

Also, I have to agree with the comments regarding the comparison of Bogart to Tom Cruise…there is no comparison…thats like comparing Bogart as an orange to Cruise who is one rotten apple (imo)

Finally, when it comes to Marlon Brando, I was pleased to see the director of the Guys and Dolls movie chose to let Marlon use his own singing voice rather than overdubbing another singer, it gave a more natural authentic quality to Marlon's portrayal of Skye Masterson imo. 🙂

  5. You’ve lost my respect by leaving out Gary Cooper! He was far better than Tracy and Cagney and Gene Kelly. And while Chaplin deserved mention he didn’t fit the era of the others. Gary COOPER would’ve made more sense.

  6. What about John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Charlton Heston, Robert Mitchum, Gregory Peck, Richard Widmark, William Holden, Jerry Lewis, Danny Kaye, Laurence Olivier, Fernandel, Toto, Robert Duval, …?

  7. I agree with everyone but Tom Cruise also. I thought he was okay in the beginning but he just became to self important. I don’t like him anymore and don’t watch anything he’s in either.

  8. I’m puzzled by your use of the word “respected”. Was it respect for their talent or accomplishments? When you bill them as the “most respected actors”, you’re implying the whole person. Your top two picks were two of the most hated men by many of their colleagues. They showed mammoth portions of disrespect to many people who didn’t deserve it.They were known for throwing prima donna type tantrums on set belittling and humiliating other actors, often reducing them to tears. So, why “respect”?

  9. First of all I don’t agree with all these but I just had to say you are Absolutely Wrong to compare Bogey and Tom Cruise. Mr. Cruise isn’t half the actor Bogey was and I don’t believe half the man either. I lived in another time than most of these men but I had to say Tom Cruise is not and should not be compared to any of these men as I see it. Also, where are the women? These are the Real stars of the time because they had so much more to overcome and they were Iconic.Period
