  1. This notion of he doesn’t take the cups seriously is completely false. Dan says trust your squad so when he rotates in the cups… in the same breath he says he doesn’t take it seriously. So which one is it? Should he rotate or not? And when he does then all fans like Dan want to shout from the rooftop he doesn’t take the cups seriously. Massive contradiction. I think its fashionable to say he doesn’t take them seriously. No facts behind them.

  2. Love you Soph! So good to have you back on my YouTube after the sad news of Kev. Hope you are keeping well. As for Dan…. Very well articulated points, not a big fan of his opinions but he put them well in this pod.

  3. Its funny you mention pre season and how it was back in the day. I'd highly recommend a book written by Eamonn Dunphy, I can't recall the name, and I think he's done a few but this a sort of diary of a season. He played for Millwall who trained at a company sports ground on the A20 near Eltham SE London. They trained in the morning and went across the road for lunch, to, you guessed it, the pub, it was called The Dutch House, I'm not sure if its still there, the sports ground is but its no longer owned by the company that used to own it ( a well known biscuit company based in Bermondsey South London)

  4. Dan the reason Arteta put Nketiah and Nelson on new contracts is all about asset protection. Had he not done that both would have left the club for free. Guess what they would have needed to be replaced which would obviously have cost money that, funnily enough, was earmarked for strengthening the starting 11. If the club had to spend 50-75 mil replacing them, that's a lot of money that isn’t spent on a Timber or a Havertz or a Rice. Those two players are likely to leave this summer and will bring in close to 50mil, surely that is better business than letting them walk away for free

  5. Moving Havertz into midfield isn't the reason we lost against Villa, the first half was one of the best 45 minutes of the season, take the chances and the game was done and dusted by half time. We could easily have missed those chances at West Ham away and we don't beat them 6 nil. I didn't agree with moving Havertz back into midfield but it's a easy and lazy excuse for losing that game.

  6. I think you're both going to be disappointed, we aren't signing a striker, there won't be any "Rice" type signings. The only striker who would work would be Isak and 1. Newcastle wouldn't sell 2. He would be ridiculous money. Also signing a striker would mean a revamp of the playing style as the current game plan isn't designed to focus on one individual. The type of signings we'll get are the sort that improve the bench and provide rotational options.

  7. "Expectations" carries the connotation of "entitlement," and I try to never exhibit an attitude of entitlement.
I have hopes for Arteta and his team, but I have zero expectations. I hope they win the league. I hope they win the champions league. I hope they win cups. And I hope they smile a lot and improve on how they feel about each other within the squad.
I feel sad, and puzzled, at people who think the only measure of success is a title. I think success is relative. Last season, and the season before, Arsenal were more successful than 18 other teams in the league. And last season, they so easily could have been more successful than 19 teams in the league. There were 28 goodly mornings last season. There were records numbers of goals scored. There were fewest goals conceded in the league. There were beautiful footballing moments, as well as proud moments from the boys off the pitch as they show themselves to be fine people and not just fine footballers.
Arteta has built a squad with integrity and character. I'm confident we won't see one of our boys chanting racist crap about other players, and I'm doubly confident they wouldn't be stupid enough to film and social media such abhorrent behaviours.
The Arteta era has been a remarkable success so far, and I have HOPES, not expectations, that it will be more successful yet. And here's the last thing …

My hopes are rational. It's reasonable to hope Arsenal win the league or other trophies because Arteta has built a formidable project. Compare this to times when we knew our team didn't have it in them to compete. It's all relative …
I recognize it's a world full of opinions. I do think people who have expectations about this team need to grow perspective and in general, grow up.
Try to enjoy the ride, y'all.

  8. Loved this show today. I agree with Dan for the most part. We definitely need to start demanding some silverware and take the domestic cups more seriously. It's one of the few areas that we have left to improve. And Arteta definitely needs to use his squad more to give our biggest stars some rest throughout the season so they don't look knackered towards the end.

I do think, however, that last season we ended up with extremely good depth to start the season, we just lost Partey, Jesus, and Timber for most of the season so it made us look a bit short. But I think that just meant the depth worked, because we kept on rolling without much of a hiccup. Definitely hoping we can replicate that again this year.

As for Arteta making changes for the Munich/Villa games, I think it's a lose-lose for him there. If he makes the change and we lose people will say "Why did you change something that was working?". If he doesn't make the change and we lose, people will say "Why stick so rigidly to the same tactics/structure/players. Change things up when it's not working."

But that's what I love about Dan and Sophie as podcasters. I can disagree with their opinions, but I at least understand where they're coming from and it makes sense.

Looking forward to the rest of the shows this week and throughout the rest of the summer. Take care everyone!
