  1. It's days later so I doubt anyone will see this, but I'm going to get this idea into the ether where it might take shape and become reality. Other VAR calls are about overturning the onfield decision which is about being able to see an obvious error made by the officials. This was not an obvious error. I feel like if you can't tell by looking at the still frame if the offensive player is offside, the tie should go to the offensive player. No more lines, no more nonsense and time wasting. If an official in a booth sees the still frame and it's even marginally close, give it to the offensive player. This technology was implemented to be able to go back and get the guys who were obviously offside or onside by feet and meters that the referees had for whatever reason, missed the call. If you've been watching football since before VAR you know what I'm talking about. A forward player is a good two meters offside but somehow the referee isn't looking and a goal stands, or the player times the run to perfection sprints clear of the defense, buries the goal only to have the flag raised. In both cases, the after images clearly show the mistake and we all groaned that we had been robbed or some such palaver. This was not a missed call and no human could have gotten that call "right". The onfield ref whether calling it offside or onside had no way of making a "correct" call in such a close situation, and the letter of the law destroys the spirit of the game in this moment. If the VAR official looks and sees space, and can definitively say with his eyes that yes this player is well beyond then call it offsides. Otherwise give it to the offesive player and move on. Less money spent on tech, less time spent on review, and fairly even implementation of close calls.

  2. I don't quite get how any of the Coventry players was offside ahead of last defender MU Wan-Bissaka at a moment when the ball was last touched by another Coventry player. I've replayed the relevant section of the video multiple times looking for it, and WB is at least a clear step ahead of the forward-most Coventry player at every moment, at least to my eyes. And I am a long-time soccer referee myself with 25+ years experience (at competitive levels, albeit nowhere near so high a level as EPL).

  3. Coventry was denied victory only by another VAR ruling that shows how it is misused. Unless a player is clearly offside, like by a complete foot or other body part, goals should not be overturned. Just because high-resolution video can see minute differences on the pitch, doesn't mean that our games should be defined by that resolution. It's absurd. Ten Hag could make himself a legend by forfeiting this match and letting Coventry take on City for the cup.

  4. Anyone saying Coventry deserved the win is incorrect. The 1st goal was lucky weird bounced of his shin into the perfect spot. In Rocket league you would spam "calculated" in irony. 2nd goal was a fluke deflection that Onana had time to save but decided to kneel for some reason? Putting that down to his lack of awareness and reaction time, DDG would never. 3rd, the handball was subjective. Coventry benefited from the refs there, but since the offside call benefited United, it kinda balances out. Coventry played well against a makeshift defense plagued by injury. But anyone saying that they got robbed is delusional/biased/hater=trolling.

  5. Embarrassing from United. Players need to stop talking about the past/culture and focus on playing good football in the present. “Ohhh we are Manchester United – we are the biggest club in the world,” blah blah blah … nut up or shut up. City is going to have a field day.
